Sometimes it is hard to say what we want to say.
We feel that it will all come out wrong and we won’t be understood!
Some people are not able to speak or hear!
Why should that be a barrier to counselling?
Ever thought of having counselling by email? In this type of counselling the counsellor and client communicate by sending emails to each other. These can be weekly, fortnightly, whatever you think is best for you. I will use my counselling skills when replying to your email. When replying I will give you feedback on what I feel you are saying and try to capture your feelings as I would if we were talking. There are drawbacks to this type of counselling (but there are with all types) and with this one it is that I cannot check my understanding of something as I would if we were in the room. I could not ask for clarification but would say, if you are saying this then I feel …… I would not just ignore it but give you feedback on what I think you are saying. It also has it advantages, you can write/reply to an email at any time of the day or night and edit it as many times as you want before you send it. There are also no time contrainsts on when we meet.
I usually like to have a chat with the person beforehand (where this is possible) to talk about about how we are going to proceed with the counselling, the practicalities if you like, and this helps to give me (and you) a feel for each other before we start.
